There are a number of different components you can combine together when creating your overall home or business security system to make it a very effective deterrent for would-be burglars. One especially beneficial item you can add to your smart security system is a glass break sensor. This is not to be confused with window and door sensors that can detect if a window or door has been opened.
Window and door sensors use two parts that work together. When they are separated by a window or door being opened, the sensor is triggered, and your alarm will sound. If a potential thief spots a window or door sensor, they can simply break the glass and crawl through the opening without separating the sensor’s two halves or triggering an alarm.
A glass break sensor, on the other hand, can be sensitive to either vibration or sound. If cracking or breaking glass is detected, it will trigger the alarm. Glass break sensors as part of an overall security system are important because:
- Layering. They help to supplement the other parts of your system. As mentioned, door and window sensors will not be activated if a burglar breaks through the window or door without opening it. Motion sensors are also an important part of a security system, but normally will not be triggered unless the intruder is already in the house. With a glass break sensor, your alarm can be sounded before the thief enters your home and, in many cases, will chase the person away before they get in.
- Area. One good glass break sensor can cover a large area, so you may only need one per room (depending on the room’s size) that has an entry point from the outside.
- Sensitivity. A good sensor will detect a breaking window, even if the perpetrator takes specific measures to deaden the glass breaking sound.
- Protection. Glass break sensors can be positioned to listen for other kinds of glass breaking, such as if you have a display case containing expensive jewelry or a curio cabinet with valuable figurines or other collectibles. This would be a scenario where you may want a glass break sensor in a room that does not have an exterior entry point.
