A home security alarm system is generally made up of a number of different components that work together to keep your home protected from intruders. More sophisticated systems can also monitor for smoke/fire or potential water problems and can allow you to monitor and change your thermostat settings, turn lights on and off, and/or unlock/lock your front door remotely.
The basic components of a home security alarm system are:
-
Control Panel
This is a touch-screen unit that is strategically located for you and others in your home to be able to activate/deactivate every component of your home security alarm system.
- High Decibel Alarm
When a break-in occurs an alarm on-site will be activated and will be loud enough to alert anyone in your home, as well as your neighbors, that there is a problem. If the break-in is caused by an intruder, the alarm should also scare off the would-be thief.
-
Door and Window Sensors.
Comprised of two pieces installed parallel to each other, sensors are placed on windows and doors—one piece on a stationary surface and one on a surface that moves when a window or door is open. When the alarm system is activated and the two pieces are separated, it breaks the circuit between them, which sets off the high-decibel alarm and sends a signal to the control panel that a breach has occurred.
-
Motion Sensors
A device that uses optical, microwave, or acoustic sensor technologies to detect motion around your home or workspace; and to let you know that there is a physical security event that shouldn’t be happening. Motion sensors are also sometimes known as motion detectors. This option is generally only used when the occupants of the home are out.
-
Surveillance Cameras
Security system cameras can be installed both inside and outside the home. These will alert the homeowner when any unwanted motion is detected so they can check the live-streaming video from the control panel or remotely from their smartphone, tablet, or desktop computer. Surveillance camera feeds can also be recorded to provide evidence to the proper authorities on details about the unwanted visitor.
In addition to offering the best home security systems in Virginia, as well as installation, Johns Brothers Security can provide 24-hour monitoring of your system. If an alarm is activated, typically our monitoring staff will attempt to reach the homeowner first, to verify if there is an actual problem or if something was accidentally triggered. We can then alert the proper authorities to let them know a potential threat needs to be immediately evaluated.
